Every other city in Britain has spent the last decade slowly getting more relaxed about sex. Brighton got there roughly fifty years ago and has been waiting patiently for everyone to catch up.
This is a town built on not minding. Dirty weekends before anyone called them that, the country’s oldest and largest gay scene, and a general civic attitude that whatever you’re up to is entirely your business provided you’re pleasant about it. The swinging scene here isn’t some hidden underground thing you have to find. It’s just part of how Brighton works.
Nobody Is Shocked by Anything
The defining feature of the Brighton scene is the complete absence of raised eyebrows.
Elsewhere in Britain, people in the lifestyle spend a certain amount of energy managing who knows what. In Brighton that anxiety largely evaporates, because the odds of anyone caring are so low. Tell someone at a party you’re in the scene and the most likely response is “oh, which one?”
For newcomers this makes an enormous difference. There’s no gauntlet of explaining yourself, no worrying whether you’ve said too much. People here have heard it all, and they heard it in 1987.
The Gay Scene and the Swinging Scene Are the Same Scene
You can’t sensibly write about Brighton without this, because the two communities aren’t adjacent here, they’re thoroughly entangled.
Brighton’s gay scene is the oldest and most established outside London, and gay couples have been doing open relationships here — openly, without fuss — for decades. That culture didn’t stay in its own lane. It shaped the entire town’s attitude to non-monogamy, and the straight scene inherited a great deal from it, mostly without noticing.
The practical result is that Brighton has genuinely mixed events, bi-friendly parties, and a scene where the usual British squeamishness about who’s into what simply doesn’t operate. It’s the one city where “what are you into?” is a normal opening question rather than a bold one.
Bisexual Brighton
Unsurprisingly, this is the easiest city in the country to be bisexual in.
Bi women, bi men, bi couples, people still working it out — all completely unremarkable, and crucially that includes bi men, who elsewhere in the scene still find themselves quietly keeping it to themselves. Brighton has no patience for that particular hang-up and never has.
If you’ve felt you had to edit yourself in other cities, this is the one where you don’t.

A Serious Kink Town
Brighton has a proper, long-established BDSM and kink community, and it’s woven into the swinging scene rather than sitting apart from it.
Munches, play parties, dedicated groups — the infrastructure has been running for years and it’s notably well-organised. The Brighton approach is knowledgeable and consent-obsessed in the best way: people here have thought about it properly, talk about it plainly, and find the idea of being scandalised faintly quaint.
For anyone curious about the kinkier end but put off by intimidating scenes elsewhere, Brighton is about as gentle a landing as Britain offers.
Where It Happens
The scene runs on a mix of club nights, private parties and house meets, with the catchment stretching along the coast to Hove, Worthing, Eastbourne and inland across Sussex.
There’s also a steady weekend influx from London, an hour up the line, which keeps things busy and means the Brighton scene is rather larger than the city’s size suggests. Dirty weekends are, after all, what this town has always been for.
Getting Started in Brighton
Same as everywhere: find your people online, talk properly, meet when you’re both comfortable. Though in Brighton you’ll find the conversations get to the point rather faster than elsewhere.
British Swinger connects you with real Brighton couples and singles across the city and the Sussex coast. Genuine local members, no fakes, no time-wasters. A profile takes a couple of minutes, browsing is completely free, and you decide entirely who you speak to and when you meet.
