Somewhere around a decade ago, the straight world discovered non-monogamy. Suddenly there were books about it, podcasts about it, newspaper columns explaining “ethical non-monogamy” to a bewildered readership, all with the breathless air of people who’d just invented fire.
Gay men read all this with a certain amount of amusement. Because gay couples have been doing open relationships openly, cheerfully and without much fuss for the best part of fifty years. The rules the straight scene is busy writing down, gay men worked out ages ago and simply got on with.
So if you’re a gay man or a gay couple looking at the swinging scene: you’re not late to this. If anything, everyone else turned up after you.
Open, Monogamish, or Whatever You’ve Called It
Gay relationships have never assumed monogamy as the default in the way straight ones have, and there’s a whole vocabulary for the various arrangements.
Open covers the broad territory — both partners free to play separately, usually with agreed rules about who, where and how much detail gets shared afterwards.
Monogamish is the popular middle ground: fundamentally a closed couple, with room for the occasional third or a bit of holiday latitude.
Playing together is the swinging end proper — couples who only play as a pair, whether that’s with another couple, a single guy, or at a party.
None of these is more legitimate than the others, and plenty of couples move between them over the years as circumstances change. The only rule that matters is that both of you actually agreed to it, which is the same rule that governs every other page on this site.
Where Gay Men Fit in the Swinging Scene
Let’s be honest about something, because it saves everyone time.
A lot of the British “swinging” scene is built around straight couples. The clubs, the party nights, the language on most sites — much of it assumes a man and a woman turning up together. Gay men who wander in expecting it to be built for them often find it isn’t quite.
That doesn’t mean there’s nothing there. It means knowing where to look.
Gay couples seeking couples is thriving and works exactly like the straight version — two couples, a drink first, see how you get on.
Couples seeking a third is probably the single most common arrangement in gay non-monogamy, and there’s no shortage of either side.
Mixed and bi-friendly parties are increasingly common, particularly in the bigger cities, and are where the gay and straight scenes genuinely overlap. Worth checking what a given event actually is before turning up, since they vary enormously.
The existing gay scene — apps, bars, saunas, clubs — is of course already there and already busy. The difference with the swinging side is that it’s more couple-oriented and more geared towards arranging things properly in advance rather than on the night.
The Etiquette Is the Same
The good news is that the rules gay men have been operating for decades are essentially the rules this whole site keeps repeating.
Both partners have to genuinely want it. The relationship that comes unstuck is the one where somebody agreed to keep the peace.
Agree the rules, and be specific. Who’s allowed, what’s allowed, whether you play together or separately, and how much you want to hear about it afterwards. Vagueness is where resentment breeds.
The third is a guest, not a service. Couples who treat a single guy as a delivery are as tedious as straight couples who do the same to a woman, and word gets round just as fast.
Say no gracefully and take no gracefully. Nobody owes anybody anything at any point.
Sexual health is part of the etiquette, not an awkward afterthought. Regular testing, honest conversations about PrEP and status, and no drama about either. The gay community has been far better at this than most, and the swinging side should be no different.

Single Guys
Single men have a considerably easier time in gay non-monogamy than in the straight scene, where competition for places is brutal.
Couples looking for a third are plentiful, and the men who do best are — predictably — the ones who read profiles properly, turn up when they said they would, respect whatever’s been agreed, and treat both halves of the couple as people rather than treating one as an obstacle. That last one catches out more men than you’d think.
Get it right and you’ll find yourself with standing invitations.
Where It’s Strongest
London has by far the biggest and most varied gay scene in the country, and the numbers mean you’ll find whatever arrangement you’re after several times over.
Manchester is the obvious northern hub — a genuinely established gay scene, a party-driven lifestyle culture, and a city that has never once been shy about sexuality. The two scenes overlap more comfortably here than almost anywhere.
Brighton deserves its reputation as the most open-minded city in Britain, and the gay and swinging communities there are thoroughly entangled.
Beyond the big three, most cities with a decent gay scene have a non-monogamous layer running quietly underneath it. It’s rarely advertised, but it’s there.
Kink Crosses Over Considerably
There’s substantial overlap between gay non-monogamy and the BDSM and domination scene — historically the gay leather community was one of the places modern kink culture was built, and that infrastructure never went anywhere.
Similarly, group play is well-established territory, and considerably easier to arrange in the gay scene than the straight one, largely because there’s less agonising involved.
Getting Started
Whether you’re a couple opening things up, a couple who’ve been open for years and fancy meeting other couples, or a single guy looking for the right arrangement — it starts the same way. Get a profile up, be clear about what you’re after, talk properly, and meet when it suits.
British Swinger connects you with gay couples, open couples and single men right across the UK. Real members, no fakes, no time-wasters. A profile takes minutes, browsing is completely free, and you stay in full control of who you speak to and when you meet.
You worked this out before everybody else. Might as well enjoy it.
Stop imagining it. Start arranging it. Thousands of British couples and singles are waiting.
