Bisexuality is everywhere in British swinging. It’s woven right through the scene, it’s completely unremarkable, and a very large proportion of members are bi to some degree whether or not they’d use the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there’s an odd asymmetry sitting in the middle of it, and the scene has been slow to talk about it honestly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bi women are assumed, welcomed, actively sought after. Bi men are frequently quiet about it, and a surprising number of couples still list “no bi guys” without ever quite explaining why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s the last real hang-up in a scene that prides itself on not having any, and it’s finally starting to shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bi Women: Welcome, Wanted, and Sometimes a Bit Hounded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let’s start with the easy part. A bisexual woman in British swinging will not struggle for attention. She’s welcome everywhere, wanted by nearly everyone, and the assumption that women in the scene are at least bi-curious is so widespread that it’s practically the default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s genuinely lovely for a lot of women, particularly ones who’ve spent years having their bisexuality questioned or dismissed elsewhere. Here it’s simply taken as read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flip side is worth naming though. Bi women take the brunt of the “unicorn” problem \u2014 couples who want a second woman and go about finding one as though they’re recruiting rather than meeting someone. Endless messages assuming she’s available to both of them, on their terms, with her own preferences treated as a formality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re a bi woman reading this: you set the terms. You can be interested in one half of a couple and not the other. You can prefer women only. You can change your mind halfway through. Any couple worth your evening will already know that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you’re a couple looking for a bi woman: she is not a service you’re booking. The couples who understand that find people. The ones who don’t spend months wondering why nobody replies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bi Men: The Quiet Ones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the bit that needs saying plainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are far more bisexual men in British swinging than the profiles would suggest. The good news is that it’s changing, and faster than it has in years. MMF is growing rapidly, bi-friendly and bi-specific parties are increasingly common in the bigger cities, and there’s a rising generation of members who find the old squeamishness baffling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re a bi man wondering whether to be open about it: you’ll narrow your options and improve their quality. The couples and women who are into it are genuinely into it, and being upfront filters out the ones who’d have made you uncomfortable anyway. It’s a better trade than it looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MMF, FFM and What Actually Happens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The two configurations, and how they differ in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FFM<\/strong> \u2014 two women and one man. Extremely common, extremely popular, and the arrangement most couples try first. The interaction between the two women is usually the point rather than a bonus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MMF<\/strong> \u2014 two men and one woman, with genuine contact between the men rather than the careful not-touching that characterises a lot of straight MFM threesomes. This is where the bi male scene really lives, and it’s growing quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worth understanding the distinction between MMF and a standard MFM threesome<\/a>: in the latter, the two men typically don’t interact at all. In MMF, that’s rather the point. Same three people, completely different evening, so it’s worth being clear which one you’re arranging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bi couples meeting bi couples<\/strong> is the fourth configuration and arguably the most straightforward \u2014 four people, everyone open to everyone, and none of the careful choreography required when only some combinations are on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curious, and That’s Fine Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An enormous number of people arrive at the scene not knowing quite where they sit, and the lifestyle is one of the few places where that’s completely unremarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Bi-curious” is used constantly and nobody thinks twice about it. Plenty of women discover in their forties that they’d always wondered. Plenty of men have spent decades assuming a passing thought meant nothing. The scene’s collective attitude is a shrug and a “well, find out then” \u2014 which is considerably healthier than most of the rest of British life manages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to have it worked out before you arrive. Most people didn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the Scene Is Most Comfortable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some cities are notably easier than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bristol<\/a> is possibly the most relaxed in the country \u2014 the bi community there is large, visible and entirely unremarkable, nobody blinks and nobody needs anything explained. If you’ve felt you had to justify yourself elsewhere, Bristol comes as a relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manchester<\/a> has one of the strongest bi scenes outside London, woven right through the community rather than tucked away in a corner of it, and the city’s total lack of squeamishness about sexuality sets the tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London<\/a> has the numbers for everything, including the widest range of bi-specific events and parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardiff<\/a> has a strong bi presence too, helped enormously by a scene where nobody bats an eyelid at anything.

Brighton<\/a> is the easiest city in the country to be bi in, and that emphatically includes bi men \u2014 the town has never had any patience for that particular hang-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle<\/a> is considerably more open-minded than its reputation suggests, and takes the whole subject with a shrug and a “your business, mate”, which is about the healthiest attitude going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s also considerable overlap with the gay scene<\/a>, particularly around mixed and bi-friendly parties, which are where the two worlds meet most comfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Note on Labels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of people in the scene do things they’d never put a word to, and that’s entirely their business. You don’t have to call yourself bisexual to enjoy any of this, and nobody’s going to demand you pick a label before you’re allowed in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equally, if the word fits and you’ve never felt able to use it out loud, this is a community where saying it will get you precisely nothing except possibly a “same” and another drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
