The city’s attitude is essentially that your business is your business, delivered with a shrug. The scene runs across Newcastle and Gateshead, out through Tyneside to North and South Shields, Sunderland and the wider North East, with a mix of organised nights, private parties and house meets.
The North East’s relative distance from everywhere else has produced a scene that’s genuinely self-contained and rather tight-knit — people know each other, turn up to the same things, and the community has a proper sense of itself rather than being an offshoot of anywhere bigger.
